Hesistating V8

Hey everyone my truck has been hesistating ever since i got it. it only does this when i start it until its warmed up. Also it only does it at low rpm, as soon as the truck gets moving, its fine. its a stock smog equipped 305v8 with a 700r4 transmission. once its warmed up, it drives perfectly fine. heres what happens. i press the gas and the engine actually cuts out like does not fire for a second and bogs down. i then feather the gas pedal and once it starts moving a little faster it stops hesistating. so this is what is happening but only at low rpm like when you are stopped and as soon as you start to press the gas, immediate hesistation. what you all think? thanks

Re: Hesistating V8

sounds to me your choke is bad or your carb needs rebuilding but need one more thing what year is your truck is it carburated or TBI. if rpm gauge whats ur idle set at.. also when was the last time you did a tune up those minor things can effect your problem

Re: Hesistating V8

I've got the same year/engine/tranny in a K1500. The choke probably needs to be adjusted but rebuilding the carb would probably be a good thing. When my engine is cold, it will stumble if I stomp the gas, but runs great with anything short of that.

I have literally the exact same problem Shaun...I just figured my carb needs a rebuild, and will be doing that this summer.

Re: Hesistating V8

If it were me i'd get a complete rebuild kit for the carb. readjust the choke if brokin parts replace. then get spark plug wires, cap and rotor, plugs, ect. check factory settings timing and so forth. I'd also replace every vacuum hose on it, then hook a vacuum gauge to it and fine tune to factory specs. a mechanically sound motor run about 15 and 20 on a vacuum gauge. thats just my 2 cents good luck

Re: Hesistating V8

Let me know if the carb rebuild helps your problem, sounds like the same problem I'm having. I'm deciding whether to rebuild the quadrajet or pony up the money for a Holley/Edelbrock replacement

Re: Hesistating V8

Yo! Be sure all is proper (hoses, eliminate vacuum leaks), use carb cleaner to eliminate that possible problem, and I'd advance the timing two degrees and test drive it. If it pre-detonates at FULL throttle you'll need to return the timing to original settings and look for another problem source. Otherwise, you can continue to advance the timing in two degree increments (with test driving) until you reach pre-detonation at FULL throttle.

Re: Hesistating V8

the problem is i didnt want to mess with the engine because in its current state it passed california smog. i would love to rip all these damn hoses off and put on a edelbrock 650 cfm and forget about these problems. I dont really have the money or time to rebuild the Q, as im expecting my first son any day now. Can i adjust the timing and it still pass smog?
