For just cranking it up, not driving, I would do as you are saying there, but I would also prime the engine...to ensure good lube on start up. (You have bumped it over to make sure it isn't locked up, right??) After priming it, I would put on new cap rotor, plugs, wires, fuel filter, and a few gallons of real good gas. (high detergent, high octane) Then disable the coil, and crank it a few seconds, listning for death noises. If all sounds good, plug in the coil, and let her rip.
I would drain the oil after 15 min or so of running it, also, don't let it idle durring the first 15 min or so too, basicly, it's like braking in a new motor, but instead of machine shop stuff your flushing out, it is rust. ------------------ '69 G.M.C. 350/350.
