True, but I never said there was recall. In fact, I work for Honeywell and never heard of a filter recall. But someone said it, and I checked it out for myself. That was the first thing that popped up.

Re: Oil Filter?

Dodge/cummins actually released a service bulleting stating that if you used a non recommended filter the warranty was void. Specifically fram filters were coming apart and clogging internal oil passages with the filter media. Wix had a few failures on the previous generation diesels as well.

Re: Oil Filter?

I usually run AC Delco but since I got my suburban and it says in the manual not to change the oil till the little guy in the dash tells me to I started running the fram 10k mile oil filters on it. I also use castrol syntec in it as well. I still use AC Delco on everything else. I have never had a problem with any of them. And so far I see nothing that makes one filter better than any other. I really think its mostly personal preference.

Re: Oil Filter?

OK, no offense intended here to anyone, but Here I go.

I frikin laugh out loud at a lot of this oil and filter BS... Listen! if you take care of your dang engine, it will take care of you... To all the Penzoil haters, they can KMA since my 40+ year old SBC has run on it since day one. No, it wasn't a little ol' lady from Pasadena drivin engine either. My truck, and my pops before he gave it to me has always been worked hard. Living all its life in a hot dry climate, and pulling travel trailers and a whole lotta other stuff through the Mojave and Sierra Nevada's. The whole time runnin Penzoil straight 40wt in the summer, and straight 30wt in the cooler (SoCal winter). Filter you ask? for years it ran a Frantz (Think Mr Whipple), and after that got replaced it ran nothing but Fram's and AC Delco's.

Stop friggin over thinking this oil stuff! Geez, it sounds like a bunch of TV comercials arguing... Which is what "they" want - your money.

Rant /off

Straw man logical fallacy. No one has suggested that poorly designed and made oil filters used with regular oil changes will produce catastrophic results or severely accelerated wear and tear. Just that better filters do a better job of protecting engines longer. The only difference noticed on a non-racing engine may be better longevity which is difficult to quantify.

Also, the worse the filter the more likely oil passes unfiltered or contaminants pass thru the filter media which can't be good and makes your admonition to change oil regularly mandatory with poorly designed filters. Your claims do not address clear categories of concern such as the following:

1. Type of filter media
2. Filter media's ability to filter down to expected levels of 10-15 microns.
3. Filter media's ability to filter to its best standard accross the entire filter media at all times
4. Reaction of filter media to high tempuratures, racing fuel, fuel & oil additives, etc.
5. Total amount of filter media versus expected build up of contaminants between oil changes.
6. Resistance to bypass opening due to cold induced pumpability of oil used
7. Point at which bypass valve opens due to clogged filter or high rpms or high volume oil pump of combo.
8. Path of oil thru filter with regards to getting only filtered oil to engine at all times.

I was rummaging thru Amsoil's site for another thread. The link above that has all the filters listed with descriptions admittedly does not include Amsoil's Ea line of oil filters. Amsoil's claims of Ea oil filter "nano fibers" vs. other filters "cellulose" that melts from hot oil seems a compelling argument:

Amsoil Ea oil filters

Re: Oil Filter?

Just my opinion, but when it comes to car maintenance: If they sell it at Wal-mart, I won't buy it anywhere.

Dang, now I gotta dig out that STYX cd lol!

Ditto on anything from walmart. I'm one to stick with anything I can from good ol USA. Lately the filters I use have been using are Fram tough guard. Never had a problem with a Fram filter.

Re: Oil Filter?

I just went on consumerreports.org, and I totally agree with what they say.

Oil filter, best
Q. Who makes the best oil filters?
A. It has been some time since our last oil-filter test, but if you stick with a major brand, like WIX or Fram, which meets or exceeds original equipment specs, you will be just fine. Most important is changing your oil on time and using the proper viscosity of oil.
