Aftermarket A/C ?

Is there a company like vintage auto air or classic auto air or another that has a reputation for having the highest quality kit. I was looking for reliability, and quality of componets. I live in florida and i cant spend another summer without it!!!

Thanks in advance!

Re: Aftermarket A/C ?

take it from another Florida member "Classic Auto air" is very good. We have used it so far in three vehicles 69 camaro,72 camaro and 71 c10....

Why not use Vintage Air?

Re: Aftermarket A/C ?

I have Old Air and Vintage Air installed in two personal trucks and I actually like the Old Air better.

Re: Aftermarket A/C ?

The last time I was looking, I came across this underdash unit (I like the looks of this evaporator more than any of the others).

That is of course if you have a non-AC cab.

Thanks,
Zac

Re: Aftermarket A/C ?

I had someone add air to my '71 with BB402 but I don't know what it was (he disappeared). I'll tell you my biggest disappointment was that there were just two vents, the air from them hit my knees, and it didn't blow very hard. The air is cold, though. But I'm hot natured and living in Georgia so this isn't working for me but I don't know a thing about air.

Just mentioning this because if you are adding air you may want to do enough research to make sure the cold air actually gets to you and cools the cab. I'm still in a pickle over what to do.

Re: Aftermarket A/C ?

This discussion is like the "Which came first? The chicken or the egg? discussion. I have Vintage Air in my 68 Non A/c cab. I was like you, I wasn't going another summer withou it. It was fairly easy to install as well. I think it is a personal prefence though. Mine's been smokin' for two summers now.

I relocated my radio so that I could have good vents that I could actually use.

Re: Aftermarket A/C ?

we have done several a/c kits from Classic auto air, and love their service after the sale! The directions are very precise, and their systems just flat work. If you look at their site, you can make the interior of your truck look factory. I did not have any of the above with Vintage air.

That's a great idea. I thought about putting one of the headliner speaker kits in and seeing if I can get the radio in up top, but didn't think about your approach. Thanks.

I've got a system similar to what you're describing. It's a Mark IV unit, apparently originally built by the John E. Mitchell Co., I think out of Missouri. I talked to the original owner when I first bought the truck; he said the very first stop he made after picking it up at the dealership was at a mechanic shop to have the A/C installed. It's cool that it's a vintage piece from 1971 but I'm only just this spring getting it connected to my donor '92 Caprice's A/C compressor and I'm not sure how well--like you say--the two vents are going to work for cooling the cab. Crossing my fingers the thing will work!

Re: Aftermarket A/C ?

I've installed Vintage Air surefit systems in several trucks. I'd have to say that if you're capable of following instructions and have a set of hand tools you shouldn't have any trouble installing their system. I prefer the setup that uses the factory A/C controls (not the non-air controls).

We also just finished mounting one of their Gen IV universal sytems in my wifes 54. Aside from it being "universal" (which required some fab for the brackets and ingenuity running the hoses) we actually like it better then the other systems that we've installed.

Odds are I won't use or reccomend anything but Vintage Air...Other people obviously prefer other brands. Flip a coin and take your pick I guess...
