Sticky Goo on steering wheel... Need help

Ok so I found a Z28 steering wheel at the swap meet the other day, The darn thing is Nasty sticky Ive tried simple green, dawn dish soap, and im about to try laquer thinner here real soon, the only thing stopping me from using thinner is im affarid it will eat more than the sticky goo. Has anyone had this problem and if so how did u clean the thing up?

I cleaned mine with 409. I sprayed it on there and let it soak awhile then sprayed some more on then pretty much just wiped it off. There were a couple more stubborn places but all in all it was pretty easy.

Brake parts cleaner on a rag works well.

I used a citrus cleaner. I think it was called Goo Gone or something like. It also works well for removing the glue left behind by stickers, etc.

Laquer thinner will eat up the wheel so don't use that. Paint thinner would work better but I'd try the Goo Gone first.

You may want to try some "Greased Lightning".
It comes in a spray bottle & it out cleans 409.
It should be available at 'most any place that sells cleaning products; grocery store, hardware store, etc.

If you get it on your hands & fingers, rinse it off as soon as possible; 'cause it'll make 'em "tingle" a bit.

The dishwasher's not a bad idea either. I've cleaned lots of things stranger than a steering wheel in mine.

lol, look at the back of the wheel and see if it says "top shelf only" for the dishwasher!!!!!

I have had many of those wheels and they all do it. Lacquer thinner won't hurt it. I have done it on everyone I have had. Just don't soak it. Pour it on a rag first and let a little evaporate first before you wipe it. It evaporates so fast it really doesn't have time to hurt anything. Those Camaro/Z28 wheels are the only ones I have ever seen do that and they all will eventually.

There are a lot of ways to clean them up as noted above. These wheels will eventually get sticky again though since the "sticky" comes out from inside the stuff the steering wheel is molded from.

gasoline, while flammable is an excellent solvent.

Sometimes, the sticky comes from your own hands. Oils from your skin, as well as whatever has been on your hands, added to whatever is in the air plus some heat from the sun will create a sticky mess over time. Same stuff "appears" on the inside of your glass and makes the glass foggy at times.

A simple vinyl upholstery cleaner will do the job. You may have to repeat it several times until you are done. If it has a grain to it, like fake leather, you may have to use a fine-bristle brush.

When you are satisfied that it is clean, do it one more time and wipe the item with a clean dry towel.

I had a leather wheel in my '96 that looked like it was coming apart. My son, who had driven it from CA, didn't think the wheel was any good. I cleaned it up 2 years ago and it still looks good....and feels good, too.

1. Do it while she's gone and never tell

Try gojo, works pretty good to clean parts i found out.

I just found my bottle in the storage building. It also took the tar off the bed of my truck!!

lol, goof off is for removing latex paint, it's similar to lighter fluid.

I'm looking at my bottle now. It says Goo Gone.
