350 mpg vs 454 mpg in stock form - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Looks like from all the stuff I have seen and read am going to scrap the idea of a 5.3L. I am now planning on going with a 350 but ran across a '96 model vortec 454 for $1000 that has 30k miles on it. Now I am considering a this motor but I don't know if it will work with the stock I6 cyl Saginaw 3 speed bellhousing/flywheel. So what mileage you guys getting with 2wd non OD stock built 350's & 454's. I am planning on a edelbrock airgap, edelbrock avs carb and headers and I am running a stick and 3.73 12 bolt rear. So with all you guys experiance what would my mileage be with 350 & with 454.

My 454 gets around 11mpg with TBI. I was getting 9 with a carb. I have 3.07 gears and hit the highway at 65-75mph. I don't haul a$$ off every light, but I do get on it from time to time.

My '69 c-10 long bed with a stock 454 gets 9.5 on the highway and 7 going back and forth to work (an in town commute 2.5 miles 1 way). It has 3.73 gears and a TH400. The motor and tranny are out of a 1 ton '74 GMC. My '67 Suburban with a 283 and SM465 has been averaging 11.5 in town but have not got a highway average. Both vehicles motors are all stock with HEI's.

I get about 12 on the highway with the White Truck. It has a stock 454 with a q-jet/th400/3.07 rear. I drive the 2 lanes and run between 55-60. I'm never in a hurry...

that 454 you have will doa tick better than 99% of the guys responding here. It has the roller cam and better heads than anything that is vintage.
If you are getting a good deal on it, you can always buy it just to sell.

If both engines are in good shape then the 454 should get you about 10-12 on the highway with those gears and probably about 8 or 9 in town. The 350 should get about 15 on the highway and 11 or 12 in town.

He said he's running a 3.73 gear with no Overdrive though.
