aaah!! nightmare of a job!
i'll defintly ask more questions before i attack a job next time!! we went to put my 350 and 4 speed in my truck today, cut out the low hump, bolted the engine and tranny together, took it to the truck... no matter what i do i can't slid the tranny in from the front, ive tried jacking up the cab (it's now against the bed) angling the motor backwards, im about to give up and just cut a bigger hole in the cab!!

if your having that much trouble, jack the whole front of the truck up and then put it......
or you could just put the engine in first, then bolt the tranny to it, but don't cut anymore than you have to.

We put a 350/350 in the 72 at the same time, but it wasn't much fun.
Can you take the tranny off the engine, install the engine first, and then the tranny? Might save a lot of grief. |

truck IS jacked up, but i was trying to slid everything in from the front (front clip is off) theres just not enough room between the crossmember and the cab for that big bulky SM465 to slid in that way

you might want to try taking the transmission crossmember off. It should give you more than enough room to slide it in.

remove the cover on the tranny that the shift forks attach to. Better get instructions first as it's a b_tch if you don't follow the right procedures

I beleive chassis overhaul manual? The trick is to set the shift forks in proper position before removing cover. Possibly reverse?
I'd definately find some confirmation before proceeding. This is what we did to get the 402BB/4 speed combo into my son's truck a couple years ago as we had same problem.

you might want to try this too. install the tranny first, but don't bolt it in, push it as far back as possible, then get the engine in. should be the easiest way. just a suggestion

I put the big block, with turbo 400 attatched in my truck with the clip off, and the tranny cross member out (I was changing it from standard to auto cross member) with out alot of cussing, although next time I might attatch the motor mnts to the motor, instead of the frame/cross member.. ( also I used late model mnts) this may or may not make it any easier...Good luck, and remember when you get pissed, and through tools, you just have to go pick them up.LOL

Take out the crossmember, and after setting it down on the motor mounts jack up the transmission and put the cross member back in. I have done this in several cars and trucks with the front clip still on.
