62 chevy 3 speed tranny

Hi everyone
i am going to rebuild my 3speed transmission and have located an overhaul kit, I have been looking for a manual to aid me in doing the rebuild and all i can find is info on a 54 chevy 3speed and nothing on the 62, can anyone with any info that would help me, i would be greatful.

thanks
jeff

maybe the 54 chevy manual will give me the basics i would need for the rebuild, no one in my area is willing to work on the old chevy 3speed, it seems all they want to work on is automatics... go figure

Re: 62 chevy 3 speed tranny

I assume you are talking about a 3 speed Saginaw. I found an illustrated exploded view of the 55-65 from a company called Classic Muscle (800-722-4828.) My rebuild kit came from Cajun Jon in Texas. Dixie Truckworks has a 1963 shop manual that may help. (www.dixietruckworks.com) Rebuilt my 63 in a day. The only thing that didn't come with the rebuild kit was the steel speedo drive gear. That I found from D&L Transmission in Huntington Station, N.Y. If you need one call Larry Fischer at (631) 351-4837. Remember the speedo gear needs to be heated red hot to remove and reinstall it as there is no clip. Make sure you measure the distance from the front face of the drive gear to the rear bearing retainer ring before removing so it goes back on in the right position! Good luck. Also note: a cheap way to clean all your old parts is to soak everything including the housing in kerosene for a day or two before you scrub it down.

Re: 62 chevy 3 speed tranny

Thanks for the information, i was given this ID chart and i have identified that mine is the 344 chevrolet transmission, i will rebuild this! i found out today that the second gear has a back cut on it that is to keep it in gear, and if that back cut is worn it would jump out like mine, so i will have to find out how many teeth this second gear has and find a replacement...

thanks
jeff
