Taking off mirrors...
I decided to get these powder coated the suggested silver, and Im going to paint the rear bumper to match.
Figured I would just take em off after dinner, should only take a couple of minutes. NOT... dang, I had to take the door handle, window crank and door panel off just to get to the nuts on the back side. I had no idea they were put on that sturdy. Getting a little half in wrench all the way up there is almost impossible unless you have little spider monkey arms. All my tools are basic standard tools. No funny shaped handles or bendy sockets and such. Ill have to take another stab at it tomorrow. Remember to give yourself some time if you ever want to get this style mirror off. Sport mirrors are looking real good right now. =)

Would you rather them be mounted loosely? Falling off? This ain't no tundra..
 I had to use a little 1/4 in ratchet and a lot of crazy angles with my arm to get it in. |

They really arent the best mirrors, the wing window gets in the way a little. I just like the chevrons on the back side. I remember liking those when I was a kid. I just assumed they were sheet metal style screws holding them in...guess I shouldnt assume lol.

It would be easier if you took the windwing and window out, that's how they were probably put on, but that's opening a can of worms...

I just did this to my below eyeline mirrors I will post up pics when the weather changes around here but I was suprised when I removed my mirrors and there where no nuts on the inside....I know I was the first person to ever remove mine....I am thinking at least on below eyeline mirrors that there where no nuts on the inside of the door....I got an nos mirror and it came with the mounting hardware and there where no nuts included.....

Mark.. I do believe they are a dealer installed mirror. I have the exact same ones on my 68 GMC 4X4...
Just a little hint.. do not try to unbolt them.. just get a bigger ratchet and wrench, tighten them up till they break off.. much easier than trying to find spider arms to loosen and unscrew rusty nuts/bolts.. just be careful your fingers do not get between the mirror bracket and ratchet when the bolts break!! |
