pulling engine, tranny and transfer case?

I am planning on pulling the engine and tranny out of my newly acquired '72 GMC K-10 but I am not sure of how to do it. I have pulled many engines and tranny's in my few years on this earth but never one with a transfer case. I haven't had a chance to get under there and check it out but when I look under there, it's so big.

Can I take the engine, tranny and transfer case out as one unit like I do all the other swaps I do or do I need to take her apart? I am new to this whole 4x4 thing and need some help before I jump right in and end up drowning.

That, and I have one of those plates that bolts onto where the carburator goes to make lifting an engine out easier, do you think an aluminum intake manifold will hold all of that weight? I have taken 350s with TH-350s out with it with no problem.

You'll need to break them apart. I have entertained the same idea on occasion, but that heavy cast-iron t-case makes it impossible. Completely different than pulling a 350/350 from a 2 wheel drive.

I don't think I'd even do it on a newer aluminum t-case either. It just puts too much weight to far to the rear.

I always take the tranny/t-case out together, engine by itself. Pulling the tranny with the t-case lets you get leverage on that big ol' pig. Beg, borrow, or steal a transmission jack to do it. You'll be inventing cusswords by the time you're done if you don't, because you will have run out of all the ones you know!

We pull the engine separately. The transmission/transfer case is heavy and awkward, so extreme care has to be taken when removing it.

We prefer to remove the trans/transfer assembly with the body off, using a chainfall but with the cab in place it is tougher to do.

We remove the trans/transfer assembly using a chainfall on the front and a floor jack under the rear lowering the whole thing to the floor. Once it is on the floor, you can move it around. Of course, no one should be under the assembly when lowering it.

I PULLED THE TRANSFER CASE FIRST, THEN THE MOTOR AND TRANS AS A UNIT. JUST TAKE CARE AND GO SLOW. THE PARTS ARE VERY HEAVY AND AWKARD TO HANDLE. BUT IT CAN BE DONE.
USE A FLOOR JACK TO HELP. GOOD LUCK

I pull the front clip off and use my heavy duty cherrypicker and pull everything out at once. It is hard but it works. And it takes some time to get it done.

What do you guys think about matt67350's approach to this. I have a manual tranny so you know they are always fun to try and put together when then engine is in the truck. I love pulling the two together in the two wheel drives, takes me no time. Just thinking that it might be easier to put engine and tranny in together and then bolt up the transfer case.
Yes? No? Suggestions...

I pulled the tranny and t-case not too long ago. Definately separate them. The t-case is heavy and awkward by itself. A tranny jack is highly recommended. I have an transmission adapter that fits into my floor jack. It worked great for removal but putting it back in would have been easier with a real tranny jack.

I agree with Matt. Drop the t-case first from under the truck. Leave the adapter attached to the t-case since it acts as the front bearing retainer on the 205. Then pull the motor and tranny together from the top like a 2WD. If you don't want to make a HUGE mess, drop the tranny pan and drain as much ATF out of the tranny as you can before you start.

A method that I have used on a truck very similiar to yours is to separate the trans and motor, pull the motor as you usually have, then remove the trans cover in the cab. Now you can slide your engine hoist into the cab and chain it to the trans and TC. You can now lower it to the ground gently. This is also the technique that you can use to lift it back into place. Not just yet, I traded for it with another member Breeh so if you look back there is one somewhere on this board. I hope he is as happy with the deal as I am because I am excited to jump into this thing and spend as much money as I have. What do ya think $23.89 will get me?

I will try to get pictures as soon as possible, I always like to document "the transformation." Lets just hope that it's as glorious as in my dreams.

TTT once before I tackle it this weekend.
I think I will separate the tranny from the engine to take it out and then when I put it back in I will have the engine and tranny together minus the transfer case.
