Dealer installed aftermarket A/C What is it worth?
I have a friend that has a 69 suburban with a dealer installed under the dash A/C system he wants to sell me. He told me to make him an offer on it. What are these things even worth? I wanted to try to get the whole rust bucket, but he wants the drivetrain. Any input is appreciated. Thanks Ryan.

The problem with those older aftermarket systems is....where are you gonna get parts for it?? It'd have to be free to nearly free for me to make the effort to try to get one of em going again.
There are several companies that sell new units that should do what you would like them to. Yeah, yeah! I know buying new isn't cheap...but neither is spending the summer nickel and dimeing an antique unit hoping that one day it's going to work efficiently. |

Re: Dealer installed aftermarket A/C What is it worth?
This is the roblem w/ al "WIW" threads. I say ALL of them depends on a few things 1. The type of truck you are trying to build (Resto vs work vs modified) 2. The part of the country you are in 3. Completeness of system. My dad (lives in S. Texas) restored his 71 GMC. It was a non AC truck. We are piecing together an aftermarket AC for it. I would have loved for someone to have given us an old aftermarket AC because it wasn't worth anything... We have about $200 in it, including a good York compressor. My brother had a similar set up in hos 72 Chevy SWB. It worked fine and put out COLD air. If tha is all you want, and don't want to be original or "high tech" with the new add on units, an original aftermarket is OK. YOu will need to find a compressor that is compatible with R-134, though...

Re: Dealer installed aftermarket A/C What is it worth?
I've been pulling one off my 68.Complete original aftermarket system.York compressor-everything.
The problems with these are: They're noisy! They don't move enough air! They don't cool fast enough! They take a lot of room under your dash! They can be converted to 134-A with a new expansion valve, lines, compressor and o-rings. I'm going to install the factory unit out of a parts truck. The original aftermarket units are cheap, but not so plentiful! I'd planned to sell mine, but haven't got it all out yet. Mike. |
