283 driveability
i know you guys have all probably been thru this and ive searched for a bit now and i couldnt find the answer im looking for..the truck that was given to me is a 1 ton dually and it probably has the original 283 in it...im not looking for anything fast and have no intention of hauling anything..im joining the army and want an old truck to drive for the summer...with a 4 barrel intake and dual exhaust how will the truck drive?? can i use it as a regular vehicle or does alot of stuff have to be changed out of it?? like gears and tranny and so on...thanks in advance

Re: 283 driveability
The 283 is an outstanding engine. Don't let the small size fool you, they perform well.
An original dually will have some mighty low gears in the rearend, so it will be better suited to city use, as modern freeway speeds will be pretty much out of reach.

Re: 283 driveability
It should make a good summer ride. Congrats on joining the Army. What M OS did you choose? Where is your boot and AIT? Duty station?

Re: 283 driveability
Back in the day I had a 71 C30 Longhorn that I towed my 66 Chevelle Street Stock with, it came with a 292 but I put in a stock 2 barrel 283. It had a 4speed with 4.10 gears. It got the job done. I can remember going too fast on the New York State THRUWAY with it late on a saturday night!!!! I think my friends had a few too many beers!!!! You will LOVE it!!!
