Aftermarket tilt questions

I recently sold my truck tilt to get an aftermarket Chrome tilt. I am looking at what's out there and have some questions. I see both 1"DD and 3/4" DD being advertised as fitting 67-72 trucks...thought it was 3/4 on my tilt but can't remember. Is it a big deal to get the same or can i just get whatever and use U-joints/rag joints to make it work? Anyone got pictures of an aftermarket setup in their engine bay? Looking for something very clean looking with possibly chome/polished fittings as everything underhood will be shaved/smooth/chrome.

Also, will a 32" column work? Or would it not stick out far enough to use the tilt against the gauge bezel? I am wanting the shortest column I can have so that I can put it as far away from me as possible (6'2" with long arms) Does the distance not matter if I go aftermarket? Thanks for any info. here's the column I'm considering right now.

And yes, I'm planning to run Overdrive 4 spd tranny (700R4 or 4L80E, etc)

Oh, and anyone that's added a neutral safety switch to an aftermarket column chime in....I'm not paying 600-800 for a "Correct" tilt column...I'll pay the 300 shipped that this is and make it work since I don't want the factory rag joint look under the hood anyways.

Where did you find that column for $300?

It was on ebay. asked the seller for more info...the item ended with no bids so maybe that's a sign....It is an imported column...

Re: Aftermarket tilt questions

OK, I will look around for it in ebay.
A couple of years ago at a goodguys show I came across a similar looking column at a vendors stall. As I recall it was ~$375. What caught my eye about your pics was the 4 speed indicator/selector which I will also need as I am using a 6.0LQ9 with 4L80E setup.
Having said all that I have used Ididit before in our 69 Firebird and must say the product and the support (which we used) was excellent.

Re: Aftermarket tilt questions

Yeah, I liked that aspect of it as well as the nicer knobs. That setup in Ididit costs about 900 IIRC

Re: Aftermarket tilt questions

If you use the collapsible intermediate shaft it will offer some adjustment. If you collapse it too far their is no protection. The 32" column will stick out the same as a non-tilt wheel so with long arms it won't be much help. You may gain a couple inches or less. You can cut your own shaft to length and install the joints.

So I'm better off with a 30"? The guy said he has those too.

Re: Aftermarket tilt questions

That I don't know. I would try and mock one up first. Using the steering wheel and seats you want etc. I tried to put one in off a car years ago for the same reason and it was way too short. I would just use the stock length column and install it as far as i could where it won't hit the dash. Then just make up the shaft to fit.
