factory alternator, worth holding onto?
Hey guys. I pulled my alternator to test it today and its no good. It failed twice on a tester at autozone. Just curious if I should go back and pay the core charge to get the original alternator back? Its a $10 core charge. Im not sure if it is something special to hold onto or not. U tell me? Thanks

Re: factory alternator, worth holding onto?
There are lots of the original low output 37 amp alternators. Unless you want to keep the numbers that match the date code of the engine they are not worth keeping.
With the age of these trucks it is possible that it was not the original alternator anyway. Jim

Re: factory alternator, worth holding onto?
oh ok. sounds good. Im not too worried about it. Just didn't wanna catch flack for getting rid of it. Yeah. I hear ya. Thanks.
Michael Maybe someone can help me on a side note: Im replacing the battery cables and the negative that runs from the block to the battery has a little smaller cable coming from the terminal connector. Can anyone tell me what that is supposed to connect to??? I know the positive cable that runs from the starter to the battery has the smaller cable connected to another cable on the inside of the fender on a mount...I assume that is correct. Anyways, any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

Re: factory alternator, worth holding onto?
The positive is correct and on the negative it probably is for some sort of ground. Probably a replacement cable. I didn't have it on my original 68 GMC that I remember.

Re: factory alternator, worth holding onto?
Yeah. Thanks. I just realized that since I am using replacement universal cable kits, that they are for negative or positive. So the one on the negative will not be used. Thanks.
