truck "shuddering" under load in reverse

hey guys,
today while backing up my steep driveway i noticed some fairly intense shuddering coming from somewhere in the drivetrane. you could hear it as well as feel it.

i am wondering if it is perhaps the U-Joint?

Was the engine lugging? if not maybe bad motor mount?
Is there a 'CLUNK' when shifting?

Could be the trans. check your fluid. Reverse is usually the first to go.

Re: truck "shuddering" under load in reverse

Mine does the same shuddering thing in reverse, but I've got a standard. It shudders like crazy when I'm feathering the clutch in reverse under load. Like when I'm trying to back up a hill slowly. But since yours is an automatic, I'd check the fluid level and color. Could be the clutches starting to wear out.

Re: truck "shuddering" under load in reverse

Check the rear transmission mount. If it is broken, it will cause the trans tailshaft to lift up in reverse. That causes the pinion angle to be incorrect, thus causing a shudder.

Check the timing, steering column, and shift linkage.

Re: truck "shuddering" under load in reverse

More than likely you are experiencing axle wrap and pinion preload. other than putting a four link in it not really to much you can do about it other than new stiffer leafs or adding a leaf. Sometimes your shocks can be worn out which helps induce it and putting on new shocks can help...

Re: truck "shuddering" under load in reverse

Maybe add traction bars to solve the axle wrap issue?

Traction bars are only going to stop the axle wrap under forward acceleration.

Sweet! Hopefully they are doing the R&R on the trans? I'd be pretty upset if I had to pull it out.
