81 gmc any aftermarket options for cruise control?
I have a 81 gmc 2wd sb i want to reinstall cruise back on it. When i bought it was a rolling shell so i have none of the factory items. Is there a place to buy oem or does someone make a aftermarket setup?
Thanks eric everingham |

I would use the Dakota Digital they sell top notch stuff. For me to add it would be no biggie since I already have there gauges they make for the 73-87 trucks. They are sweet!

I use a www.rostra.com unit. Works great. It will pull the throttle all way open if necessary to get back to the set speed! I've had it engaged and it would kickdown the tranny and accellerate. The unit is easy to install.

Re: 81 gmc any aftermarket options for cruise control?
I've installed two different types on my trucks. The first is a unit from Audiovox.
Electronic Cruise Control ZX810344U Each $155.99 @ www.jcwhitney.com. It costs $99 when I bought it several years ago!! The unit is easy to install. Instructions are not well explained. It does need a vacuum resevior for small engines. Yours may be require two reseviors or one large one. The control pad can be installed below the light switch. My 83 Chevy has a unit from http://www.rostra.com/cruise-control.htm The units from Rostra are used by hot rodders. It's awsome. It will pull the throttle all the way open if necessary to reach a set speed!! I use the vacuum unit. The electronic version is probably better. The cruise cost is twice the Audiovox unit. Re: 81 gmc any aftermarket options for cruise control?
If you are willing to do some work, an electric unit from an 88 and later truck can be retrofitted. It needs an electric signal from your speedo cable (available for aftermarket efi from various places) and then hooks to your carb or throttle body. Since most of it comes from the wrecking yard, it can be done inexpensively. I understand it works much more reliably than the factory vacuum units and uses the original steering column controls.

Go with a Rostra electronic unit, you won't regret it. Easy to install and works great.
