4x4 question

What up guys!! Quick question...I have a 1972 C20 3/4 ton long bed 2WD. I was wondering if a front and rear end on a 1999 Suburban 4x4 would fit so that I can make a Conversion. Is this possible? My uncle thinks that it is, but I want to make sure so I thought that I would ask the experts. Let me know if it is possible??

not easily. if your going to do all that work might as well do a solid axle swap

Anything can be done with enough money and fabrication..

It certainly isnt a bolt in ordeal.

And I agree with bigblazerboy, you might as well go solid axle if you are going to got through all the trouble.

When you say solid axle swap, you mean to take the whole axle from the burb and put in on the Chevy right? That was my original plan, but I did not know if it would fit. IS there a lot of work in making a complete axel swap??

No, what they mean is you are wanting to swap in the late model's IFS suspension and it will be much easier to get a solid axle like in this picture to swap in.



This is a Dana 44 front axle from a 1978 3/4 ton.

What are you trying to build this truck for? Has a bearing on what front axle you should try to get.

You could try to get either a Dana 44, definitely go no older than 1971 so you get an open knuckle with disk brakes, or a Dana 60, but a Dana 60 is more expensive and may not be necessary for what you are trying to accomplish. If I were you, I'd look at getting a donor solid axle 4x4 then you will have all the parts available to swap in the solid axle.

You will of course need a transfer case, adapter, 4wd transmission, front driveshaft, transfer case crossmember, 4x4 engine crossmember, different length rear driveshaft, front axle front spring hangers, front spring rear shackles, a high transmission hump, and I believe a 4wd steering box.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some things but this is a start.

Sure might be easier to get a good donor 70 or 71 K10 or K20 and just swap your body over and add the high tranny hump. It's not a small project either way.

I agree with Yukon....So basically you want to find a donor between '71-'87 in a truck or '71-'91 in a Blazer or Suburban. Whether you look for a K10 or K20 depends on your intended useage of your truck. If the '00 Suburban's engine is available that would be a good engine to use, but other than that the running gear from that would be much more work to put under your truck than the above mentioned vehicles.

You coul put your body on the 99 frame, suspension and all.... But why?

I think it would be sweet to see a 72 body style with an IFS suspension lift. It would be Different! If you have the will, I'd go with the body swap to the 99 frame.
