Kick panels I made this weekend

Took me a couple hours on Saturday to make the frames, Sat. night to let them dry and 30 min Sun to paint and install. Not too bad and cost me $0!!! Thats the best part! Just used some 1/4 plywood, some 1x2, an old t-shirt and some fiberglass resin.

Re: Kick panels I made this weekend

ya, I only had enough fiberglass for one but figured doing one fiberglass would be a waste. it didn't dry as hard as it would with fiberglass but the t-shirt works great!

Just don't kick your kickpanels With just one layer of cotton they won't take much of a beating. The t-shirt does make a good base for the shape though.

Thumbs up Re: Kick panels I made this weekend

I did the same basic thing on mine, used an old t-shirt for shape but then I laid fiberglass cloth strips over it 2 or 3 layers thick. Yours look great. I hope they hold up well for you! Keep up the good work!

Re: Kick panels I made this weekend

Ya my buddy said the same thing last night... didn't think about it being too thin. This is my first try and I'm sure I'll redue them at somepoint so next time i'll use the fiberglass cloth over the shirt. now you resin the shirt then each layer of fiberglass, correct?

Correct, I dipped each 2X6 or so strip of fiberglass cloth in resin before applying and then brushed resin over top of each piece as I laid it. You are definitely on the right track, keep up the good werk! You should be able to scuff up what you have done so far then apply fiberglass cloth over top of it. I can't guaranty the two layers won't de-laminate since the old has fully cured but as long as you scuff up the old work I think it should bond well.

Re: Kick panels I made this weekend

any of you guys use the kitty fur? (i think that is the slang anyway)
it is fiber mixed in with resin, think it comes in gallon cans. saw it on tv, they did the fleece or t-shirt stuff then covered it with the kitty fur....

Re: Kick panels I made this weekend

I've used it. It works great in certain situations. I would only use it to build shape in this circumstance and similar situations over a base of fiberglass fleece (or an old shirt!) and fiberglass cloth. You generally use kitty hair for the same types of repairs you would use plastic filler aka bondo for, but when you want greater strength than standard plastic filler has.

Oh yeah, true fiberglass fleece is stronger than a resin soaked t-shirt so if that were used you could probably skip straight from fleece to kitty hair. I still doubt I would do it, but I imagine it would be okay.

Re: Kick panels I made this weekend

Here are the panels I made for the 'burb....they are pretty solid when complete. I used short strand reinforced fiberglass resin for finishing...then some Rage before paint.

Re: Kick panels I made this weekend

Thanx Mean low!!! It was fun....I may re-do them in the future as I should have placed the speakers a little higher in the panel. No big deal and they work perfectly as planned.

Re: Kick panels I made this weekend

I've not heard of 'fiberglass fleece' before, just cloth and matt. Can it be found in the same places or is it a specialty item?

Re: Kick panels I made this weekend

Fibreglass fleece is I believe regular fleece, which is what I used on my kicks, the same stuff they make jackets and blankets out of. It's thick and dries hard. Lots of nice stuff on here guys!

Re: Kick panels I made this weekend

Yes, it is just plain fleece used for molding then soaked in resin. There is no fiberglass in the fleece, I just called it (fiberglass fleece) simply because of it's intended use.
