Red face won't start

Hi, my ? is about the dist cap wire setup. I know the firing order, but the truck
manual i have, shows a diagram of where the no 1 plug is located for hei ign.
Its at 530 oclock. Now i have it at 530 but backfires thru the carb. The timing
is not on dead center but have the dist loose to move it. Please advise and
thanks.

Re: won't start

5:30 is only good assuming you have the distributor meshed with the cam gear exactly like the factory. it sounds like you are 1 tooth off. You can either pull it and remesh it by 1 tooth or just grab a light and see if you can set it where it is. Since the backfire is in the carb, assuming the engine runs (and not just backfires!) then you have too much advance (firing plug before intake valve closes).

If it doesn't run and just backfires you need to set #1 on the compression stroke, top dead center, and set the distributor in so that the rotor is pointing at the #1 contact. This should let you start it so you can get a light on it and set the timing.
