Yes it can be done. If you have a stock dana 44, I'd go find a dana 44 with disc brakes already. Just my option.

If it is a closed knuckle, you need another dana 44. if it is open, fairly simple to do, just need the knuckles out

Re: front disc conversion for k20?

Ok, sounds like I need a newer axel. I may have access to a 75 k20 front and rear. I have heard the rear is about 3/4" wider, are the spring mounts in the same location (width)?
Is the front axle wider? What do I need to swap the front out?

thanks

Re: front disc conversion for k20?

the front is a direct swap but the rear needs the spring pads and shock mounts need to be moved. you'll also need new front brake lines, master cylinder and prop valve. swapping the knuckles outward is not hard and probably the cheapest route though.

Re: front disc conversion for k20?

I want the newer axle with the heavier U joints and tighter steering radius.

Re: front disc conversion for k20?

the newer axle shafts will fit your in 70 housing. i put the newer stuff in my 71 housing that came from the factory with posi. not only are the u-joints bigger but the shafts themselves are larger diameter. parts are much easier to buy at your local parts store also. if the gear ratios match, a complete axle swap is faster but if new ball joints are needed and the gears are different i would use the later knuckles, spindles etc. on your 70 housing.

Re: front disc conversion for k20?

option #9501AA if i remember correctly. the original owner of the 71 ordered it with posi front and rear to use as a hunting vehicle. i bought the truck as a wreck from the second owner and used the axles under my 72 super after i went through it completely-all new bearings on the carrier and pinion, new ball joints etc. and used 73 up axle shafts, spindles and hubs.
