Stuck in 4 Low!
Yesterday I was at my grandmas property getting parts and decided to try the 4 wheel drive out. I just installed a different SM465 and NP205 recently and figured Id try everything out. I have been driving it on the street for 3 weeks now and everything seems good. After playing around for about 5 minutes in 4 Low I tried to put the transfer case shifter back in 2 wheel drive but it was stuck. I put the truck back in gear and moved forward and tried again but the shifter was still stuck. I then put the truck in reverse and let the clutch out quickly. It then came out but was still hard to get it out. It acted like something was bound up. The shifter moves fine once its out of 4 Low. It did this last winter with the extremely wore out sm465/205 but I assumed it was cause the transfer case was wore out.
Has this happened to anybody else? Is this acceptable on a used t.c., or is my newer transfer case worn too. Im worried about it being stuck when Im 30 miles off the highway cutting firewood and only being able to drive 8-10 mph all the way home. Makes for a long ride. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks 71stroker

Re: Stuck in 4 Low!
i ran the exact same setup you have and i have experienced this. it has happened to me where i can not get it out of gear and or drop it into 4low. i roll a little forward or reverse and it drops right in gear or comes out of gear like it should. now it has only happened a very minimal amount to me out of the times i have used it, so i was not to worried, but still would like to know the answer. i was told that my adapter plate between the two could be damaged and causeing things not to line up right. but since this last weekend i have pulled 205 and my adaptor plate out (cause i am switching to a turbo400 divorced t case) and all was fine. i was also told to be careful on how tight i got the t-case shifter bolted to the link????

Re: Stuck in 4 Low!
Yup, I run the 465/205 and gettin outa low can be sticky at times. I found that when I put it in reverse, roll a bit, push in the clutch while rig still rolling backwards then the 205 lets go. Sometimes it just comes out easy...
sleepy today

Re: Stuck in 4 Low!
Mixing tires with more or less wear or with different air pressure can contribute to this. Like Burt says, reverse with your hand pulling on the transfer case shifter while letting the clutch out abruptly repeatedly will usually do it real quick. Also make sure your wheels are strait and not turned.
This is pretty typical. chas

Re: Stuck in 4 Low!
try shifting out of 4low to 2high just like shifting gears without a clutch.

Re: Stuck in 4 Low!
The binding in 4lo is fairly common. Backing up to relieve the stress usually works. In an extreme case, jack up one front wheel (to take the pressure from it) so you can un-lock the front locking hubs. This can free-up everything and make it shift again too.
