Was 454 an option in 1971?

Hi

I am new to this and still have a lot to learn.I just found out a V-6 was available in 67-72.
Any way I am looking at a 71 Camper special.Well looking at an ad for a 71 anyway. It says it has a 454.
Was that available stock in 1971?
It is 7 hours away so I can't just look at the SPID.
Thanks for any help.
Here is the craigslist link,

No. I think '73, '74, but not in our trucks.

Re: Was 454 an option in 1971?

Agreed, no 454s in the 67-72 trucks. Also, the v-6s were a gmc thing up to 69 i believe it was.

Thanks for your help guys.
It does not blow the deal but it is not original like the ad states.
Thanks again.

Definitely a bargaining chip, and a 454 to boot!
Good Luck!

Re: Was 454 an option in 1971?

the seller will argue and argue with you that it is original, or that his dead uncle knew a friend, or that it was a top exec's truck, or that it was a 'mistake'....
still never seen proof of a factory 454 though.

Re: Was 454 an option in 1971?

I would be willing to bet it is the original 402 in it. Check the suffix code on the pad stamped just ahead of the pass side cylinder head on the block. 71-72 402 3/4 ton should be TKX.

Re: Was 454 an option in 1971?

Looks like a longhorn. I agree,it's probably a "402" and it does look pretty nice.

ps a "Longhorn" has a longer (by 6 big inches) bed.

Nope. 73 was first year for 454 in pickups, but the 396/402 had been around for years before that.
