Vibration-What next
I've got a vibration in my drivetrain somewhere, and I can't figure it out.
After the tires are checked for balance, what should be my next step? Driveshaft, U-joints? The vibration starts at around 60 mph and goes through about 70 mph.

you should be able to just grab on to the driveshaft and see if you have any play in the u-joints. if all ok there you could have thr shaft balanced if ok then you will have to dig into the rear pinion bearing, axel bearings or carrier bearings also ck all mounts you could possible have one abit worn

Well, I think I found the problem. I hope.
My Dad and I were under the truck looking for an exhaust leak and I mentioned the vibration to him. He grabbed the drive shaft and shook on it. There was a considerable amount of slack where the tailshaft (I think that is what it is called) goes into the diff. Do you think that could be it? My Dad seems to think so, and he knows a lot more than me about these trucks. Just thought I would run it by the group.

It was the shaft moving around in the diff. housing.
My dad said something about the crush washer being bad in the diff.?

Yeah, I found that out the hard way. My wife's minivan had a shimmy in the front end and my Dad kept saying it was the tires. Well, I didn't believe it was the tires. After paying a lot of money to have the struts changed out (which is what I thought the problem was) I gave in and changed the tires. Problem solved!

He says, "Oh yeah, those 350 big blocks are good engines." I quit talking to him after that.

Is it just a bearing in the diff where the yoke goes in that I can replace without having to do a gear setup? Providing that my gears are ok.
I mean is this something that I can do easily?
