What exactly are you converting from? It is important to know if you have a 3 gauge dash with idiot lights or if it is a seven gauge dash with an ammeter.
If it is the 3 gauge dash then the brown wire that went to the old external voltage regulator simply plugs in at #2. There was a blue wire there from the external regulator but it is just an extension of the brown wire. Refer to the thread posted by 70GMCer.
If you have a seven gauge dash with ammeter then you can run a wire from any switched 12 volt source, BUT, you will have to wire a resister in series with that wire before you connect it to the alternator OR you may blow the diodes in the alternator and it will not charge. A 75 ohm 3 watt resister will do the trick. This replaces the charging light resistance and the resistors on the bottom of the external voltage regulator.

Okay, I'm not the sharpest around.... The large red wire goes from the alternator hot post to the regulator plug and terminates? Perhaps you could draw before and after schematics to make this more clear?

The large red wire from the alternator does not terminate at the voltage regulator. It runs to a splice which connects with two other red wires one of which feeds the battery and the other feeds the firewall plug and the interior of the cab. There it connects to another three-way splice that feeds the headlight switch and the horn relay and the fuse panel.
In the diagram below you will be able to follow this and see where the brown wire from the firewall plug goes to the voltage regulator. The brown wire ends at the voltage regulator and the blue wire takes over and goes to the alternator to the sensing terminal. You still have not answered my question about whether you have an ammeter gauge or an idiot light dash.
