First some background: My 71 sits alot- I crank it (not as often as I should) but enough to keep battery up. Anyway a month or so I take it for a short drive just to move the parts around a bit and it began to sputter and hestitate. It died and after a few tense moments I got it started again and back into the garage. First thoght bad gas, so I drain nearly 5 gallons out, replace fuel filter and check the fuel lines for collapsing pieces. I replaced the line (rubber) that come from frame to pump. No help. Fast forward to last week, buy a kit for the carb install it without a hitch crank it up and if anything it was worse or at least not better. It burns your eyes at the exhaust idle fluctuates like a vac leak yet nothing is showing (WD40 around base and hands over throat). Fast forward again, getting ready for a local show drive to community gas station nothing is better and had to start with starting fluid, then it just shuts off like key was switched off. Crack the line at carb and zero gas at filter. I think maybe fuel pump, replace that as it was cheap and still doing the same, but at least it ran to get it home. Any thoughts or suggestions???? All are appreciated.

Re: Carb help
Either that or you may have some water in the tank.
Just a thought.

Re: Carb help
Check fuel pump, take line off at carb, turn over engine and see if fuel is pumped to the carb. If filter is OK it could be the fuel pump.

Re: Carb help
The fuel pump was replaced today in parking lot of gas station. The fuel filter was also changed today. The motor is stock but with 18-20 inches of vac. but when I put vac guage on it today only pulling 12 -14 inches of vac. I had to turn idle screw in quite a bit just to keep idling. This pushes me toward carb issues. The carb was built by jet about 6 years ago, but I refreshened it up last week. The only thing I could find was the plunger diaphram waded up around the spring in the accellerator pump. The kit I put in was a delco kit and float did not show sinks of sinking etc.

Re: Carb help
Must be the carb and probably the pump.
