anyone ever had a torque converter go out?

I was wondering if anyone has had thier torque converter go out...I think mine is going...I've got some bad noises coming from down there and I'm almost positive that it's my torque converter, but I haven't heard of many going out so I'm not sure what to expect...any help?

It's a 72 c10 with a 350/350

A cracked flex plate will make a lot of noise.

I've got the cover off and the flexplate from what I can tell looks like it's all good. There seems to be some clanking and gridage going on in my torque converter though...

Re: anyone ever had a torque converter go out?

you cant see where they break its ussually where the bolts go in the crank...and it may only be a cracked one...try unbolting your torque converter and giving the fly wheel some love front to back then rotate it a bit and try again until you find a bad noise or feel real confident

Re: anyone ever had a torque converter go out?

I had one go in my 87 box truck,It just kind of disassebled inside and filled the unit up with metal filings. When I flushed out the cooling lines and radiater cooler it looked like red metal flake paint in the bucket. It made noise, more grinding than clanking.A broken flex plate bangs and clanks though.

Re: anyone ever had a torque converter go out?

When my convertor went out it just had a hard time going forward. I had to rev my engine and it would kick in gear(like a neutral drop). It did that a few times one day and then it only had reverse. I thought it was my tranny so I tore into it and it was fine. The clutches looked great! They don't go out often but they do.

I had one go bad, it kind of sounded like a bunch of broken glass in a metal box. Somehow, I made it home.

I had a fin break off one, it made a lot of noise cruising along but would hush when you stepped on it.
