Instrument gauges?
I have a 68 without instrument gauges and have chance to buy complete instrument panel with gauges. Question is, will the clip work on the curcit board to operate the fuel gauge, directional signals, high and low beam indicator and how would you hook up the tempature guage and ampmeter. I realize the speedometer and oil presure have individual lines. Thanks for your help!

Re: Instrument gauges?
This is not an after market set up. I have a donor truck that had the complete guage cluster, but wanting to switch to the stepside.

Re: Instrument gauges?
If they both are 67-72 and both originally came with gauges then it is a direct swap.

Re: Instrument gauges?
I'm a little lost here too.
You have a truck, with no guages at all.... the whole inst panel is missing? And you've located a complete inst panel, and want to know if it'll fit? Or do you have a truck with the acc guages, but no tach, and you located an inst panel with a tach in it and want to install it. |

Re: Instrument gauges?
Sorry for the confusion. My truck has instrument panel, but only has the speedo and fuel guage and turn signals. The donor panel (from 1970 GMC) has the above and oil pressure, temp. guage and ampmeter. Neither have the tach. Trying to install donor panel and hook up so every thing works?

Re: Instrument gauges?
if your gauge looks like this... you had an idiot light gauge originally and will need to rewire as shown on the gmcpaul website.
If you had the 7-hole guage, then you can just plug in another 7 hole gauge and be good...

Re: Instrument gauges?
yep, the link above is what you need to do to make it work.
DON'T just plug it in. You WILL cry. Trust me. Your friends will laugh... mine was laying in the dirt ready to pee himself. That was a bad day. |

Re: Instrument gauges?
You are right. I am the idiot, my guage cluster looks like the one you show. Now, do you know how to pull the plugs out of the old plug and move to the new spots?

Re: Instrument gauges?
Apparently you have done this before. Do you know how to pull the pins from the old plug?

Re: Instrument gauges?
I never got around to it on that truck, and all the ones I've had since then had the optional panel.

Re: Instrument gauges?
Mike,
I personally have not done this. Andy (longhorn man) has. I believe with a small flat screw driver you can release the pins, pull out and push back in the correct spot, but i am not 100% Edit **** just read Andy's post.. Others should chime in, that have does this conversion....

Re: Instrument gauges?
lol! I hit enter as you were typing! No, I haven't done it... I just suffered the humility of thinking it was plug and play.
My fuel guage never worked right again. |

Re: Instrument gauges?
I am in the process of doing this now and to remove the tabs follow this: Stick a skinny/small flathead screw driver underneath the front of the pin , push back as far as you can and lift it up, some make a tiny little pop noise when released, others don't - you are basically releasing/bending the metal tab holding the pin in there. Next stick the small screwdriver on the back of the pin where the wire goes in and slowly pry it out using the black plastic holder as leverage. I bunged a few pins up as I learned this process, but after a couple it became easy, just be careful and take your time. You will have to rebend the metal pins back out so that when you slide them back in they will hold again...hope this helps!
