Steering Shaft Swap??

Anyone ever swap a steering shaft on a 1972 4wd steering box to a 2wd shaft? I have 2 almost new 4wd steering boxes and I'm doing a crossover steering conversion. I think I read somewhere this was doable but I didn't et the details.

If it is doable I'd like to know what and where I can source the parts/tools needed. I guess a few tips couldn't hurt either!

Re: Steering Shaft Swap??

are you talking about the shaft between the steering column and the steering box? or are you asking about the output shaft of the steering box?

Re: Steering Shaft Swap??

The 2wd steering box is a requirement for crossover steering. With the 4wd box's shaft has half spline half not. With that the 4wd box won't allow you to rotate the arm 90 degrees in order for the crossover steering to work. Let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Steering Shaft Swap??

Right. I have read that some folks have replaced the output shaft of a 4wd streering box with an output shaft of a 2wd streering box. I'm wondering if anyone here has done the conversion.

Re: Steering Shaft Swap??

I know what you are talking about... Im getting an output shaft out of a Junk Yard today. Same thing, have a 4x4 box, doing a cross over, blah blah blah. I dont want to pay for the whole box so Im going to pull just the shaft. Ill let you know how it goes and Ill report back with the how to.

Re: Steering Shaft Swap??

I believe its the same box even up until the 80s, but I'm pulling off a 69. I also believe that the later boxes were closer steering ratios so you dont turn the steering wheel so much. I dont know details though.

Re: Steering Shaft Swap??

If I remember correctly, I simply unbolted the 4wd sector shaft and pulled it out and very carefully inserted the 2wd shaft. It seemed too simple at the time and no one near me had ever done one before either. That was the mid eighties so maybe I have forgotten a few details. But that was when I converted my truck to crossover steering. Man that seems like a long time ago....

Re: Steering Shaft Swap??

I decided not to pull the one from the JY. they wanted 45 bucks and forget that. Im just going to get a new 2wd box, makes more sense. I'm also going to have a buddy fab up my crossover and suspension. He does a lot of baja race trucks here in Socal so I trust him over myself...
