Re: Id this engine

Do you happen to have a suffix code to go by? I may be able to narrow it down for you.

Larry, see if you can find the numbers and letters stamped on the pad just in front of the passenger side head.

Re: Id this engine

That intake is definitely older....the oil filler tubes were gone long before the 70's IIRC. No accessory bolt holes on the heads make them pre-68/69. Doesnt really ID the engine.

Re: Id this engine

Yes, a suffix code would definately help in the id Of this motor. I would clean up that casting number to get a better look. I have had several motors that have had parts of casting numbers look like another number. And also, If for some reason you cant figure out what you have fron the casting number, Open it up, run the parts numbers like, crank and cam. And determin cylinder bore size. Check the charactoristics of the block and try to match them to either pre 68 or later.

Don't get me wrong here. I'm no pro at this stuff. I'm just throwing some suggestions out there.

Good luck with it.

Re: Id this engine

Oh I just happened to notice that the oil dipstick is located on the
right side/driver side of the engine. That location of the dipstick is consistant with 68-76 blocks.

Re: Id this engine

Sounds like a good deal. I have a 350 block with a 327 crank. It basically makes it a 327 except for the cyl. bore which makes it something like a 329. Anyway, my point is that it is entirely possible that the motor is a 327 even though the casting number says it's a 350.

Re: Id this engine

A few more little things to do to it and it'll be ready to fire. Can't wait to hear it.

thanx for the pic ,nice engine .so by changing the crankshaft alone or what needs to be done to be 327 .guess this would of happened because i was going to put 327 parts back in it .he was sure it was a 327 .how about the intake i like the intake .does some make those new

Re: Id this engine

I'm not sure if those intakes are made anymore. But if you like the one you have, take it to a machine shop and get it hot tanked. Should clean up nicely. With proper preping, and a few coats of high heat paint, it should last you a long time and look great.

Re: Id this engine

It would be my guess that it is a 350 block, although they may have used the same block for the large journal 327's. Both the 327's and 350's had a 4 inch bore. The difference is the stroke of the crank and the pistons. For $150 that is a good deal.....the heads alone are worth that to some people. That would be a sweet engine for your truck with the right parts.

Re: Id this engine

check out this chart for SBC bore and stroke

http://www.aces.edu/~parmega/sbc.html

says the 327 and 350 share the same 4 inch bore...
