another power steering swap question
I looked but can't find this info. Maybe Im just blind.
Anyways, I was wondering if I could swap a power steering setup from a 73-87 Chevrolet Truck 250 or 292 engine....onto my 67 chevy 292? And by setup, I mean, the pump, steering box and brackets. Will I be able to bolt the box onto my box location and will I be able to bolt the pump up to my block? And will my steering column mate to the newer box? And the box to the linkage? Thanks a lot for any help. I can get this setup pretty cheap, but I gotta grab it before the truck heads for the crusher. Thanks |

IIRC the box will work but the pitman may need to be changed.The connection from box to column should be easy enough even if you have to use a rag joint rebuild kit.The brackets will work "IF" they are from a non integrated head engine to a non integrated head engine or from intgrated to integrated.But they will have to be 292 brackets(you should get those at least since they are fairly rare.The 250 brackets are different.This is all from research and not actual use since I am slowly collecting the parts to put PS on my 68 250.
With this bump I hope someone else more knowledgeable will chime in.

Thanks for the info PanelDeland. Im not sure if it is a 292 or 250. It looks alot like my 292. Also, integrated head??? Could u explain?

The intake and exhuast are a part of the integral head.IIRC they can be modified but I'm not too sure how.Big thing is the size of the side covers.250 are 4 in tall and 292 are 6 in.They need to be the same to work but if you can get the setup you should since you may be able to do a trade.

On the pitman arm issue, all you need to know is that there are two varieties, power and manual. Simply get the pitman arm with the power steering box and you're golden.
The box will bolt right to the frame with the existing holes, and the pitman arm will drop right into the center link like the original. On the box, make sure you get the fiber washer (rag joint) with it. Then, your stock steering column shaft will bolt right to it, no mods needed. On a 292, you're going to pay hell getting the pump brackets though. They are rare. The brackets off of an integral head 292 out of a later truck will not bolt onto your earlier engine. You're either going to have to modify/ fabricate your own or pay dearly for a set off of the parts board from someone.

Bummer!!!!! The salvage yard crushed it already. Im not a huge fan of that body style myself, but it was a pretty solid and clean truck. I can't believe places crush stuff that is that complete. They should at least part it first. Oh well, back to searching for another.

another thing you should check before you get too far into performing this swap is weater your frame is flat, or dimpled where the steering box mounts, some frames all the way into early 68 model years had flat frames
my 68 has the flat frame and i bought an addapter from captain fab so i could go powersteering,the circled area of the picture is where the steering box mounts this is the best picture i have of the power steering addapter i got it from CaptainFab, if you find out you will be needing one i would talk to him
