Removed my carpet and guess what I found

Rust!!!

Whoda thunk it huh?

Will have to try to get pics.

I had noticed a small hole in the area by the sill plate at the driver's front, didn't go all the way through and didn't know how extensive it was either. I removed the carpet to prepare for the heat/sound deadening that should be showing up next week. Found hard nasty padding and styrafoam type stuff under it with lots of surface rust under that. The right kickpanel even has a hole through it to the vent area at the base.

So, seeing as how it's mainly surface rust I figured the best idea would be to try to knock most of it down with a grinder or sander. Then get some por15 or equivilant and go over it before installing the sound deadener over that.

Question is, good idea? And how much will I need to do the area from the front seat mount holes forward. Or would it be better to do the entire floor board while I'm at it and how much more would it take? Thanks

You could sandblast it and see how much really needs replaced, or go with the POR 15 if blasting aint an option.

That hole in the vent hole is almost a sure fire way to tell if the cowl area is rusty under the fender..might want to check that out and fix it right before it gets much worse

Thanks, I figured as much, I'd also love to fix it up right. Everything I do is done with the idea of do it right the first time, spend a little more now to save later. However, I am not a body man, nor can I weld or fabricate, also I don't have the funds to have it done. There is a guy at work that has a welder but he's kinda hard to approach and I really don't know what all is involved in this kinda job. I plan on having this truck forever and my idea is to someday do a complete frame off. That being said I'd like to fix it good enough to last until that point at least. Really don't know what to do at this point.

I don't know how to do it, but the one guy on here always puts up little signs that say This tread is useless without pics.

Re: Removed my carpet and guess what I found

Buhl is in my current neck of the woods! The only way to stop rust is to remove it, then cover it up to prevent it from coming back, I have not used POR 15, I hear is works well, I also know that short of doing what I mentioned above or cutting it out and replacing the metal is just a bandaid that'll buy the some time till your frame off, you could use JB weld to patch up your rust holes after grinding, I would get one of those little sandblasters and blast it down to gray metal and start from there, metal, sealer, patch, epoxy primer, and paint in that order. More than one way to skin a cat, tho, so I hear, good luck my fellow Idaho dweller.

Re: Removed my carpet and guess what I found

Hmm, I guess it depends on how far down the road that frame off project is.
The POR will slow the deterioration way down, maybe getting you to the real fix without having to a lot of fixing now.
That being said, If you do the repairs now, and its not done correctly then its getting done again in the not too distant future.
Oh, and Welcome from Boise, ID!

Dang you caught me! Me thinks that about everyone can identify with these pics.

POR15's site says one quart will cover about 96 sq ft, so a pint oughta be more then enough I would think. Couldn't be more then 35-40 sq ft over the whole floor and kick panels. Right?

I guess I shoulda pulled the carpet and padding out when I got the truck 3 years ago. Gotta love hindsight.

Nope. Grandpa bought it from a local farmer 10-12 years ago. Was garaged after he bought it, been under a carport ever since I bought it. So this rust was mostly caused by crap gathering in it's first 25-30 years of farm life. Me washing it every week probably didn't help either. Oh well, it's to be expected when you're dealing with classic metal, I'd hate to see some of the vents in the other 3 trucks like these we have out back.

Re: Removed my carpet and guess what I found

Well he suggested cutting it out and using fiberglass. Obviously wouldn't rust but that's a suggestion I hadn't thought of. He said he's done it before on other cars. I guess if I coat it with some POR-15 then paint it or carpet it no one would ever know. Oughta build some kinda hinged setup that allows full access into that stupid corner area. lol
