What do you think?

My 305 is sickly and I'm not really enthused about having a 305. So, I've been keeping my eyes open for something else. I found a '73 truck not too far from me that has a '69 327 in it. He's asking $750 for the whole truck. What do you think about getting it for the 327 and maybe front disk set up and then parting the rest? Also, will my edlebrock intake bolt up to the 327?

Re: What do you think?

I would go for it. I think you will like that 327. 305's are okay, but a nice 327 is always better . Plus, taking what you want and parting the rest you will recover a bunch of your cost if it all sells good. Oh, and yes, your Edelbrock intake will bolt up to the 327.

I would find a Gen III 5.3 for $500 and call it good. Much more reliable and fuel injected.

Re: What do you think?

I'd want to know if it's a large journal or small journal 327. 327's are fun - they scream.

Re: What do you think?

The guy emailed me back. He doesn't know anything about the 327 except that it runs well. He's only had the truck 9 months.

The reliability would be nice, but it just doesn't fit my build.

Can you tell by the numbers whether it is a small or large journal?

Re: What do you think?

a small block is just as reliable as a ls motor. they just cost a whole lot more.
Some ppl don't understand that one man's budget bolt on, is another man's entire budget.
750 is a lot for a used motor, however, the front cross member and all the assorted this's and that's will end up making it a good deal... assuming it is all good stuff. If the front end needs all ball joints and tie rod ends and calipers/rotors.... then it isn't worth much as an assembly IMO.

Re: What do you think?

You could always offer less than $750.00 too.

What trans is in the truck?

If it is really a 69 motor then it has the large journal crank same as the 350

Maybe you could sell it and reduce your cost some.

Good point. My '69 Chevelle Service Manual still has specs listed for the 327, but I think it might just be a copy from '68. In '69 I think Chevelles, Impalas, and Camaros got either the 307 or 350.

I'd run those numbers to ground before you buy...

Re: What do you think?

im pretty sure the 327 stopped in '68. dont quote me.
and IMO the easiest way to determine the journal size is pull the crank pully and measure the balancer hole. (already went through that fiasco lol)

as for the truck, offer less, most he can do is say no. and if the parts are in good enough shape for you to regain some of the cost by re-selling the parts, or all the cost, then i would go for it. especially if it has disc brakes.

swap the entire crossmember sell the truck with the 305 as a roller and you might get back what you paid.

Re: What do you think?

Better think about that one a minute.....never saw a small block hit 275k personally. While I am sure they are out there in small numbers, most all gen lll's will go 250-300k without much trouble.

You can hardly go wrong with a 327 though. They are every bit as good as a 350 and if it's a large journal [highly doubtful], it will outperform the 350 if built well.

Re: What do you think?

Yes they did make a 327 in 1969. check the block casting number and the engine code in front of the passenger cylinder head. That truck should have a turbo 350 trans and the wider rear drum brakes too! If you go to look at it get the engine good and hot and listen for noises and check out the oil pressure at idle. I LOVE RED STEPSIDES!!!!

Re: What do you think?

If the front end and brakes are in good shape it`s worth it.Try for less,of course. You`ll get the master cylinder/booster.does your truck have p/s?What rear do you have and whatrear does the`73 have?Is the body rough on the`73? Long or short?

Re: What do you think?

I had a '69 Impala with the 327, one owner original equipment. Years later I put that engine in my 78 stepside with Muncie 4 speed. Man it was fun.
