help a brother get a brake
pun intended.
1972 3/4 ton 4x4, front axle brake setup. This is todays issue. The calipers for 1/2 and 3/4 are the same. The rotors are not. Knowing several things, I need some help. The backing plates with dust shields are almost non-existant. And because the trucks are different, you cannot interchange them. I went to a local salvage yard and asked for later model 3/4 backing plates. They had to pull them and I picked them up. He assured me that they were 3/4 ton plates. They cannot be. The rotors dwarf the plates and it would be impossible to get the caliper mounting bolts installed. Does anyone have a 73-up parts manual that might look up the backing plate numbers for me? I will take these back and see what he says. Maybe I need 1 ton in 1973-up.

Re: help a brother get a brake
I would think any 1971 to 1987 ¾ ton Dana 44 or Corporate 10 bolt front end would have the same backing plates??
When I swapped my K10 from 6 lugs to 8 lugs all I changed was the backing plates and rotors. At that time (1996), I found almost a never ending supply of them at the junk yard on various years of ¾ 4x4’s that were all the same.

Re: help a brother get a brake
Thanks Jerry. I may need your help.
I went back to this yard last week to swap them out and he says he is out of them. No telling when a donor truck will come in. So Saturday I drove 160 miles to a pick-n-pull and it was a bust. We are almost out of yards in this area. I will PM you.

Re: help a brother get a brake
just a heads up, you probably WONT find them ina junkyard easily..
due to the massive interest in solid axle crawlers and muddres and projects, it's very hard .. very hard to find a good solid front axle hiding out... check your local craigslist for a parts truck or the newspapers because honestly, besides repop (overpriced) or sheer luck.. those are your best bet.. it took me 2 months to find junker axle shafts......
