Starter question
I am having a problem with my starter. When i turn the key it cranks for maybe one or two revolutions, then disengages and just spins. I try it again an it may make another rev or 2 then kicks out again. I can get it started if i keep trying, once in a while it will stay engaged for several turns and then it starts up. I have not had any electrical issues lately, other than I had to replace the ignition switch about a month ago. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as this is my daily driver.

Like it cranks then it whines or what? on my dads 67 mustang it did this. it cranked for a few cranks then whined and when i let go from crankin it would grind and finally grab... i ended up putting a new starter on it and fixed the problem.. a new starter for our trucks is around 30-40 bucks with lifetime warrenty from autozone. let me know if this helps

if its what i think u should get a new starter as soon as u can because we waited to long on the mustang and it messed up the flwhweel teeth a bit

No, it doesn't whine, I think the starter gear disengages from the flywheel ring gear and continues to spin. I replaced the solenoid but it did not cure the problem. I was thinking it's either the starter is bad, or the ring gear is so worn, it cannot keep the starter drive gear engaged and it slips back out.

I'd get a new starter and make sure its shimmed correctly if need be upon installation, if it where my truck.

Starter drive or Bendix. They run 18 dollars for a new Borg Warner brand one at any parts store. No sense putting a POS rebuilt starter on because your Bendix is bad. I'd take a well proven starter with a new Bendix over any parts store reman any day.

Yes, the little sprag inside of it gets worn and will cause it to disengage. The teeth on the outside can still look perfect. It's inside that you can't see. I dealt with this same issue on my own truck a month or so ago.
My parts guy (a good one) advised me to never get the cheap store brand drive either. He sees them fail a lot. You should step up and get the Borg Warner brand for a few dollars more. Still under 20 dollars out the door though.

When I asked for a starter drive a few years back at a great parts place, the old school guy asked me if I wanted a bigblock one or a regular one. Seems that the bb one has an additional clutch in there for more holding power to turn over 11:1 compression motors. It was indistinguisable from a normal one on the outside. Mabe ask for a starter drive for a 70 Chevelle LS6...
