Is there a test I can perform on my temperature gauge to verify that it works...not that it is accurate but that it even works?

If you apply 12V to the positive side, and ground the other momentarily, you should see the guage rise toward hot. In chassis; with the key on, just touch the wire off the sender to ground while somebody watches the guage. On a '72 V8, the sender is on the side of the head by the exhaust manifold.

Don't do this on a computerized vehicle.
