Simple question??? i hope
Ok what is the difference between 4h and 4h lock also 4L and 4L lock????? i am new at this 4 wheel drive stuff and trying to learn everything i can.

hmm, good question. Im no expert and would love to hear an experts explanation. My best guess is that 4hi vs 4hi lock would be something to do with an independent front and rear shifting ( like this http://www.jbfab.net/ ), I know its referred to as "locking out the front" when you lock the front driveshaft, spin the rear tires to help position yourself for an obstacle, and vise versa for the front. Who knows tho, I may be way outta line and it could be the same thing...

Oh another possibility would be, if you switch your transfer case into 4hi and dont lock you hubs. that may be considered 4hi versus locking your hubs, which would be 4hi lock?

ok well i have a fulltime NP203 transfer case so i dont have locking hubs.

and it shows a difference in shift pattern or what? I would think there wouldnt be any difference then between 4 low and 4 low lock but like I said Im no expert here... Im sure you'll get the explanation your lookin for, tons of knowledgeable guys on this site.

The full time four wheel drive 203 transfer case has an "interaxle differential",(planetary gear arrangement), that allows for the front and rear outputs to turn at different speeds.

Actually it's a Spider gear arrangement. There are no planetary gears in an NP203...

Basicly you have 3 differentals in the truck. 1 in the front end. 1 in the rear end. And 1 in the transfer case. While in 4 hi or 4 low all 3 diffs are working. When you shift into 4 hi loc or 4 low loc you are locking the diff in the transfer case to send equal power to the front and rear ends...

In 4H and 4L you can go from dirt to paved roads without binding the driveline. The differential in the tcase allows some slip between the front and rear drivelines.
In 4H Lock or 4L Lock the front and rear drivelines are locked together and driving on pavement with cause binding and damage.

4h-loc/2H-loc = conventional 4wd without free-wheeling/locking hubs.
