Is there a way to identify my v-8 without seeing the casting #'s, as the booster is in the way. I have the 8-400 emblem on the front fender and it has a four barrel carb. The truck is a '72 C-20.

Any help or direction would be appreciated.

On the pass. side of the block below the cyl head you will find a boss with no's stamped in it. there should be some suffix letters that will identify it. sounds like a 402 with the 400 badging.

Where exactly would the codes be? I recently removed the a/c compressor and I still can't see any codes. The oil and grease doesn't help though

Look at the 2nd pic that you posted, starting at the in line fuel filter follow the fuel line down pass the valve cover on the passenger side all the way down to the very bottom of your pic, now the 3 inch long flat part of the engine block thats just to the right of the fuel line is where the code is stamped.
Get a can of brake cleaner and a wire brush

Excellent, thanks very much.

The code is: TO4131KX

and that means: I don't know, I tried searching for different variation of letters and numbers, but could not find anything.

Could someone help? I don't know what to do.

You could always just get the casting number off the back, drivers side and look it up here; http://www.ajgeneral.com/bbc_block_casting_numbers/

I know it's a pain, but give it a try.

Clean the pad good and check the code once again.
In a book of codes I see TKX for a 1972 C/20
So check out the 6th digit see if it is a ( T ) if so it means....T0413TKX
T - Built at the Tonawanda, NY engine plant.
04 - Month of April
13 - 13th day of the month
T - Truck engine
KX - 402 BB, 210 hp, Auto Transmission

There's probably a good chance that it is a T without the - on the top as the whole code is kind of at an angle. Ill look at it again today.
