Re: does $50 sound good for a 5 lug coil spring rearend?

A 5-lug coil sprung rear in a one wheel wonder is worth $100-150 so if you steal it for $50 more power to ya!! It may be a posi, and if so then it is worth $300 or more depending on the ratio. Redneck it, stick it in the trunk of a car it is only 1/8, or get a couple of "BIG" friends to come over and carry it for ya!! Buy beverages, they'll do it, I would!

Re: does $50 sound good for a 5 lug coil spring rearend?

I would pull the cover and change gear oil and inspect it to be sure no broken teeth or metal chunks in the carrier (this also allows you to ID if it is a posi or not!), also do a rear brake job, $50 and you won't have to worry about them for a while!!

It probably needs new seals all around. Hopefully no water got in it.

Re: does $50 sound good for a 5 lug coil spring rearend?

I'd be willing to bet the ring gear is rusty.

I've seen rears that sat a long time... where anything above the level of the oil becomes rusty from condensation.

I'd pull the cover and check it before handing over any cashmola.

Re: does $50 sound good for a 5 lug coil spring rearend?

Well yes and no, if the rust has made pits, then yeah because that'll weaken the teeth, but again for a $50 rear, I'd still buy it and run it rust or not, clean it up real good and use, just know somewhere down the line you'll need a set of gears ($150-200) and the labor to have it installed (another $200 or so), but untill then you have a 5-lug rear.

71/72 5 lug axles will be too long if it's a pre-71 6 lug rear.

Value would be based on condition, which we know nothing about. But,if the guy is willing to cut his price in half for you because you don`t have as much as he wants and the rear is something you can slap in and run, then yes it`s worth it.
