Clear marker lights question
Are they allowed in the state of Texas? If so is there anything special required to use them?
Just to be clear I am refering to the lenses on the left and right side as well as the rear.

Re: Clear marker lights question
They are illegal in all 50 states, DOT regulations state they must reflect the color amber in the front and red in the rear when unlit at night. DOT is pressuring all states to step up enforcement of these regulations and are applying pressure to the states to also begin stepping up enforcement of the retailers, wholesalers & manufacturers of these. DOT has also declared that it is illegal for a retailer to sell them using the disclaimer that they are for off road use only as the retailer has no way to ensure that the purchaser & future owners will only use them for off road use.

Re: Clear marker lights question

Re: Clear marker lights question
i personally think they look really good, on vehicles with darker colors, not a fan of them on silver or white. i have all four corners along with tails i just put color L.E.D. bulbs in all of them, i bought them at autozone. they arnt cheap but they dont fade or anything, plus they are brighter than originals.

Re: Clear marker lights question
By using red or amber bulbs with the clear sidemarker lights or red bulbs with clear 67-72 taillights still does not make them legal. Because the front sidemarker light must "REFLECT" Amber when UNLIT, which means when the lights are off and a vehicles lights or some other light hits the sidemarker it must reflect Amber and the clear sidemarkers light up white, the same is true for the rear sidemarker & taillight lens when unlit they must reflect light in a red color, the clears all reflect white light even with Amber or Red bulbs in them. The same requirements are not required of the front parking lights because the regulations for them only require that front lens light up amber in color when lit, and can reflect either a Amber or White color when unlit.
Most local & state law enforcement do not know the law properly thus its not being enforced by many this is why the DOT has ramped up information programs to the states and law enforcement stressing the fact that sidemarkers & taillights reflect the correct color lit or unlit and are threatening fines to manufacturers, wholesalers & retailers for those that continue to sell them. If you like them and show your truck put them on at the show, but otherwise when you hit the road they are illegal. GMCPaul |

Re: Clear marker lights question
GMCPaul has pretty well covered the legal details. In Texas, if you register your heap as an antique, there is no inspection required. Now, that doesn't make it less illegal to run them, it just keeps an inspection guy from giving you the beat down about it. It's been my experience that LEOs are pretty easy going about minor stuff.
