Re: brake line coils

no you do not need them......they have 2 purposes
1) they are a maintance loop.. meaning that should there be a variance in aftermarket parts (prop. valve, master cylinder, booster/ mounting bracket) you can simpley 'un-coil' it to desired length...
- also, those end fittings, get rounded (from not useing a flare wrench to take them off) and need to be replaced....so the extra coil is there just for that reason....instead of replaceing the whole line, just cut bad fitting off, install new fitting, flare, and re-connect......
thats the purpose of the coils, do you need them??? no, but you may wanna think about adding that service loop, for the above reasons, just in case.

Re: brake line coils

I always thought they were there for when the cab would flex on the frame. A service loop also makes alot of sense too. Either way I installed them when I did the brake lines on my 52.

Re: brake line coils

I've always been under the impression that they work just as a form of vibration isolation. Steel tubing will work harden if flexed continuously and will eventually become brittle and break at the flex point.

x2. It also allows flex within the lines which help prevent premature wear. On a weekend cruizer they're not needed; on a daily grinder, the 'loops' seem to have several benefits,

x3. The coils spread the flex over about a foot of brake line instead of concentrating it in just one spot. You can 'spring' those coils just about forever, but bend a brake line in one spot a few dozen times and *snap*.
