Gear Shift Removal
I wanna take the gear shift out of my '70 and shorten it. Its a 4 speed manual on the floor. The service manual says something about a tool and makes no mention of what looks like a pin going through the side. Do I need this tool?

Re: Gear Shift Removal
I have done this twice the last month, the first one i ruined. if you push down on the rounded part, (the shifter comes thru), it will go down just a little and allow you to turn it a quarter turn, then it will lift right out.

Re: Gear Shift Removal
You do not need a special tool. Take a pair of Channel lock pliers, press down on the coller & turn it ccounter clockwise about 30 degrees. It should lift right out.

Re: Gear Shift Removal
Turn the collar or the shifter counter clock wise? I assume the installation is just in reverse?

Re: Gear Shift Removal
Place the shifter in neutral and turn counter clock wise on the bulb that is around the shifter no need to mess with the pin. Should not even need pliars if you use a little wd-40 of similar first.

Re: Gear Shift Removal
Ok...getting it off was easy...no tools required. But do you have any tips for putting it back on? that spring is one stiff sucker and I cant push it down far enough by hand.

Re: Gear Shift Removal
Actually im starting to suspect the gearshift is not seated far enough into the tranny. When I look down into the opening, I dont see a clear slot for the shifter to seat into. Right in the way is a spring loaded stainless pin on its side. Is this right?

Re: Gear Shift Removal
Ahhh never mind. I got it. The little pin (that I assume is for the reverse gear) was in the way. I pushed it back with a screwdriver and all is good.
