81 vs 85 smog equipment

I have an 81 c30 and bought an 85 c30 454/t400. My friend has an 84 c30 454/ t400 w/ 60k original miles on it.

Anyhow the amount of smog equipment between the 81 and 84 is minimal. The amount of smog equipment from 84 to 85 is astounding. The 85 has dual A.i.r. pumps all kinds of vacuum lines to and from the air cleaner. Tubular headers with the air fittings. It is gross.

What gives?.....................john

In Texas 84 and older do not have to have a cat. This may be the year the EPA started cracking down on vehicles.
