rarity of 1971 big block w/ short box

i've seen big blocks in long beds but only once have i seen a big block in a short bed. just wondering if anyone had an educated guess of what percentage of trucks were "factory big block shorties

2nd part of the question is were the big blocks vins stamped on the engine pads.

3rd part is were they all 310 hp. or ???

Re: rarity of 1971 big block w/ short box

No solid numbers less than 5% of total shortbeds for that year, probably even less than that 1-2% maybe??

The only place it would say BBC is the spid, and it would say 400 ci.

I'd guess they were all the lower hp rating w/iron intake, etc.

it is on the spid as 400, and showes it to be 310 horse power. i thought most were 210hp?

The 71 BB motor I picked up for my 68 "50th" build, rates it at 310 HP. I think in 72 the ratings were lower even though it's basically the same engine.

Re: rarity of 1971 big block w/ short box

They are rated at 310 at the flywheel so it is much less at rear wheels in 71, the heads are not the greatest for power if that is what you are looking for. I have had much stronger small blocks than the stock bb in my truck (fresh rebuild) but the thing runs out on the top like no other.

Re: rarity of 1971 big block w/ short box

VIN is not stamped on the block. There is a number on the block pad in front of the passenger-side cylinder head that identifies the production facility, assembly date and has the engine code (TLM for example). Typically the engine is produced within a few weeks of the truck. This number will match the Protect-O-Plate if they are lucky enough to still have it.

Re: rarity of 1971 big block w/ short box

Many of the Big-Block equipped SWB trucks we see available today did not leave the factory that way. Documented/original nicely-optioned SWB/BBC trucks are very rare and expensive.

They are not all that rare out here...you just don't see them for sale very often because the people that have them do not want to sell them.
