Question DIY Tonneau Cover?

Hi Guys, has anyone made their own tonneau cover?

I'm wanting to do a soft flip up cover... I was thinking black vinyl and an aluminum frame with tube supports.

But I'm open to any ideas!

Re: DIY Tonneau Cover?

I like it, installed fairly easy, keeps the water out, except there is a small gap at the top of the tailgate, but a extra strip of weather stripping fixed that

Re: DIY Tonneau Cover?

What about a cover for the stepsides? I don't want to spend 1k for a fiberglass cover. I would like a regular soft cover. I have an older button one now, but it needs to be replaced.

That's why I suggested as a DIY project. Why should I pay $250 or more when you can get the materials for less than $100 probably. I had a soft flush one on my old Silverado and it was a pretty basic setup.

Re: DIY Tonneau Cover?

I think this thread reviving. I'm picturing an aluminum hard cover or even just a soft vinyl one that is easy to put together. Come to think of it, I think I had a diy on a toyota hilux I had. It was built out of aluminum tubing and angle pieces. I wonder how expensive something like that would be?

hmm, gears are turning now.

Re: DIY Tonneau Cover?

I made one out of aluminum using 1" sq tube and a 1/8" sheet it worked great I'm thinking of making one for my crew cab

Re: DIY Tonneau Cover?

Is there any way to make a DIY snap cover? I'm wanting to put one on mine, but I don't think I should have to pay $300+ for one that could take weeks to get here. I like the look of the snap style.

Re: DIY Tonneau Cover?

75silverstep built a pretty cool hard one that he covered with vinyl for his stepside. He had L-channel angle iron bolted on the inside of the bedsides, if I recall correctly.
