72 3/4 ton 4x4 rear drums HELP
Hi guys I need help trying to figure out the rear drums for a 72 3/4 4X4 for a guy I know. Here's what we know:
72 truck with a 12" x 2" brake shoe face and the drums are about 5" deep in total. Upon trying to find new replacements he keeps coming up with a drum for 12" x 2 1/2" or slightly larger shoe and they don't fit. I don't know specifically what diff he has or that is exactly the one it came with the truck for sure but it is probably a genuine 67-72 rear diff. If anybody knows what we need to look for in the parts books to find the correct one it would be greatly appreciated.

in 72 he could have only had 2 differentials. The Dana 60 or the Eaton/Corporate. The Dana 60 drum is held on with 2 screws and slips over the studs like a 1/2 ton drum would. The Eaton drum has the wheel studs pressed through it and into the hub. That is all the help I can offer.

I did a major brake job last year. Contrary to da-burb's post, my drums were pressed onto the wheel hub studs on my rear Dana 60. Rather than go thru the time and expense to press them off, I got a decent set of replacement hubs from a junkyard donor, and bought brand new drums. These new drums slipped over the studs and are held/centered with two large flat head screws. I also replaced the bearings, wheel cyls, shoes, springs, and master cylinder. I have all the part numbers for the new components if you're interested.

After further conversatoin with the guy it sounds like it's an Eaton diff in the truck. Still need help to find the correct drums. I will post this on the main board as well

Yeah, you got your hands full! I did that on my 71 K20 about a year and half ago.It has original big 10 bolt round covered eaton.
Looking up parts turned out that 71 was an odd ball with 2 inch wide shoes, and 72 was the one with 2 and a half inch shoes.More square inch of surface area I guess.Anyway, ended up pulling axles, knocking in new races and bearings in hubs and getting drums cleaned up.Old shoe rivets had just started to contact drums. Was rear axle ever changed out that you know of? |

The 72's had the 14 bolt full float axle as well. A picture of the rear would help.
