Metal dowl? If its a basic GM long pump, they come with a NPT pipe plug to block off the heater return if the vehicle is equipt with a radiator heater return. I've found the systems with a waterpump heater return are more effecient and heat the coolant faster than the style that use the radiator as the heater return.

YA A METAL DOWL THING.. PIECE OF ROD METAL, ABOUT 1 1/2 INCHES LONG, 1/4 INCH WIDE. THIS HAS CONFUSED THE HELL OUT OF ME FOR YEARS. IM NOT TALKING ABOUT THE PIPE PLUG.

Hmmm doesn't sound familiar...
Can you take a pic of it so we can see what your talking about?
Generally most GM aftermarket or new pumps come with a Clamp, Pipe plug and gaskets. Occasionally they will supply you with the 4 studs and sealer.
