First question on my Cheyenne............

..........something that has been eating at me since I got my '71 is how to tell if it is a real Cheyenne? I have no reason to believe that it isn't, it has all the woodgrain trim etc. and the holes look factory after taking it apart.........the reason it bugs me is that for a Cheyenne it was pretty bare bones, manual steering, manual brakes, no gauges...........is there something in the VIN that confirms it? Thanks from one of today's newbies!

Re: First question on my Cheyenne............

Should say on your glove box lid.
The option code is Z84.

Re: First question on my Cheyenne............

Thanks, I just looked and it does have that code, and it says "custom sport truck" next to it. I figured where it had been off the road for 15 years or so that it must have been original, but you never know. The engine was replaced with a targetmaster 350 (remember those?) and runs great, I will have to live with that.

Re: First question on my Cheyenne............

I had a friend in high school that had a bare bones 72 cheyenne that was almost identical to what you have described, it did have the standard two tone (white top) but was plain jane as could be with the exception of the 350 - manual steering, brakes and three speed, no air etc. just basic cheyenne package.

Re: First question on my Cheyenne............

Z84 was a CST from 67 - 70, and some of the people typing never got the memo, or were just too lazy to do there job properly, but if it says Z84, then it is the real deal.
Remember, it is only a trim package, no other options were required.
I once saw a LWB 250/3 speed manual, with no options other than CST and a rear chrome bumper.

Re: First question on my Cheyenne............

Alot of the early and mid 71 trucks retained the custom sport truck designation on the spid.

Re: First question on my Cheyenne............

mine was a 307,3spd manual, no a/c, power nothing just bottom of the barrel hell I think the spid label barely had anything on it maybe three or four things...It also says custom/10 on the fender badges whatever that means....

Re: First question on my Cheyenne............

I may add power steering, it is a bear to navigate in the driveway..........the brakes I can live with, but if I get a booster I may do that as well. No rush. Another quick question, I want to change the colors to 2 tone light and dark green, after seeing a GMC a few years ago. The interior steel is already light green, would it be wrong to keep it that way? And still have the dark/light green outside? Just trying to figure out how to jamb it out. I may just paint the interior dark green, but it looks fine now, just trying to save time. Or does anyone have a pic of a 2 tone light green and white, with the side painted white? (Not just the roof.) May do that too..........

For whatever reason they changed the name to " cheyenne" in 71. Same as the CST,just new name. Blazers kept CST designation. My blazers say "cheyenne" on the spid.

Re: First question on my Cheyenne............

I think you are referring to Medium Olive Poly and Dark Olive Poly. Are you going for a correct original "look"?If you do the two-tone with medium Olive as the accent (sides & top) the interior would be the Dark Olive. But,it would look great with the medium Olive interior. It would still "look" factory, only not "correct".
Here`s Medium Olive w/White accent color. Not your exact truck, but the color combo:
