Has anyone tried to dye a carpet kit??

I picked up a carpet kit for the 67 of CL, could pass it up, it was 40 bucks and brand new in the box. Problem is that it is Turquise(Spelling?). I would love to dye it black? Any thoughts

I think you would be better off selling it on the board and getting the color you want. I've dyed some interiors before and sometimes you can't see the difference but you can feel it. The dye stiffens the texture of the carpet.

What would your feet and shoes do to it over time? Door panels or dashes are one thing but that might be a disaster down the road. Sell to board member or eBay and buy the right one.

LOL I dont want to sell it!!LOL it was such a great deal, you know like a womens dress that is on sale so they by 5 of the same dam thing!!LOL

I've used duplicolor and color bond and a couple non name brand from local upholestry shops all them do a pretty good job.

Man your gunna ruin it if you try to die it. Because the carpet is made of polymer. "plastic" so your basically gunna spray paint your carpet.
What i would do, is offer it up for trade. Maybe somebody needs that colored carpet and all they have is black.

if you should decide to dye your carpet, brush between coats to get full coverage and to help keep it pliable.
It will work but, the dye will wear off as previously advised.

i dyed the carpet in my GTO from torquiose blue to dark navy blue with RIT dye, about 5 years ago i did it outside, laid out in the yard on an old piece of plywood, got it to almost boiling in my 10 gallon crawfish pot and poured it on, then brushed it in continuously until it cooled then i let it sit for a few hours, then rinsed it thoroughly and let it dry. it still looks like it came from the factory that way. the carpet i dyed was new that i bought at a swap meet cheap for 25 bucks, but not the right color so i had little to lose. i think you can still buy Rit dye at Walmart or a fabric store (it is a fabric dye but will dye polyester).
if you only got 40 bucks in it you don't have a lot to lose, and the dye should cost no more than 10 bucks. i'd go for it.

Sounds like a good tip, i never even thought of using actual dye to dye a carpet. I'll have to try it sometime.

If it is a driver, i would not die it with the RIT, it WILL fade with use. I did it on seat belts, faded to gray and looked like do-do after 2 years of low mileage use

I used Plasti-Kote vinyl dye on my original carpet. It has held up OK for the past couple years. Since you have brand new carpet, I would offer it up for sale here on the board and buy the correct color.

LOL i know i shouldnt dye it but i just cant seem to part with a good deal, how could i sell it or trade it for somthing when i only paid 40 bucks. LOL i guess i will have to think about it a little more.
