Rear Bumper Mods

Anyone have pics of modified rear bumpers that look like they actually fit our trucks? I would hate to ruin Harry Bentley Bradley's original vision for these trucks by putting an afterthought looking factory bumper on my truck. And, no, I don't want to slap on a roll pan- they always look like something's miising from the truck.

What kind of bumper you wanting... what's "wrong" with the ones you've seen?
Can't help without more detailed info on the problems.

Re: Rear Bumper Mods

I guess it depends on what kind of look you are going for and if you have a step-side or fleet-side.

Here is a picture of a step-side with a bumper that I have been told that may have come from a El Camino.

Re: Rear Bumper Mods

I have a fleetside truck, and the factory bumper seems like it doesn't really fit the truck. It's too tall and too wide and isn't at the same angle as the bottom of the bed. It just doesn't look like it was designed at the same time as the rest of the truck, like it doesn't flow with the rest of the design.

Re: Rear Bumper Mods

'Scuse the old picture (my truck looks a lot better now), but it's the only one I have handy of the back end. My truck probably didn't have a rear bumper when new and this is what is on it now. Doesn't look too bad except it's a little bent out of shape on one side. I'm not sure if I will replace it with something similar or go with the standard rear bumper. I don't think they look that bad, but I fully understand what you mean about them looking like some kind of afterthought.

That is a '78 and up El Camino bumper a couple of posts up by the way.

Re: Rear Bumper Mods

Previous owner of mine welded on the brackets from a 78? Chevy truck. You could probably drill and bolt on the brackets instead, and maybe move them in a little further than what I have.

When I put the new bed on, I cut off the wrap-around ends of the bumper, because the bed that was on the truck when I got it had to be dented to make room for the wrap-around style, and of course I wasn't going to dent my new bed to make the bumper fit.
