Starting in '77 or '78 model trucks there was a mix of 10 bolts and D44s. By '81, they were all 10 bolts.

They're pretty easy to tell apart. Either it has "44" cast into the webbing on the diff center section or it doesn't.

This is one of the biggest cross-overs that I know of......I don't know if it had to do with availibility or what, but pretty much 77-78 model years could have had either.

Re: dayna 44 or 10 bolt front diff?

My 77 K10 has the cooperate 10 front. 77 was the change over year. From everything i have read they are about the same strength wise. I have had it put to me this way.......... It is not worth the time to swap a 10bolt out for a 44. I have heard the 44 is a little stronger but not enough to make a huge difference. This is all 1/2 ton stuff by the way. I have pushed my 10bolt pretty good on the trails andit has not let me down yet. true it is on 31's but i can go everywhere the jeeps on 33's go. I am lifting mine 4 inches and swiching to 33's so we willl see how the 10bolt holds up. HHonestly tho I feel it is better to wheel it and break it then upgrade. And if i ever really bust the 10 bolt i am going D60 14bolt anyhow

Again I don't have expedience with the chevy 6 lug dana 44's just what i have read around the net
